List of Provinces in China

Known to be the world’s largest in terms of population, China is also the third largest country in the world when it comes to area.

Due to its size, they divided China into 23 provinces. In addition to this fact, China’s system of politics also became different from that of other counties. Most of it is broken up into provinces; however, there are some, which still have same hierarchical rank as provinces.

These 23 provinces comprise of over 160 cities with population over one million. The total population of China is 1.29533 billion, which is about 22% of total population in the world. Its most populated administrative region is Henan Province with 92.56 million people, while Tibet (Xizang) Autonomous Region is the least populated with only 2.62 million.

China is consist of four Municipalities; Beijing, Chongging, Shanghai and Tianjin. Listed below are China’s provinces.

China’s Provinces Ordered by Land Area

1. Qinghai
• Area: 278,457 square miles (721,200 sq km)
• Capital: Xining

The province has a sparse population, 4.04 million in total. The inhabitants consist of different ethnic group: the Han, the Tibetan, The Hui, The Monoglian, the Tu and the Salar.

2. Sichuan
• Area: 187,260 square miles (485,000 sq km)
• Capital: Chengdu

The province is 488,000 square km large with population 87.26 million. It is consist of different nationalities such as Han, Yi, Zang (Tibetan), Miao, Hui and Qiang.

3. Gansu
• Area: 175,406 square miles (454,300 sq km)
• Capital: Lanzhou

The province covers an area of over 450,000 square kilometres with a population of 25.58 million.

4. Heilongjiang
• Area: 175,290 square miles (454,000 sq km)
• Capital: Harbin

Heilongjiang Province has become now one of the well-known tourist destinations in China due to its extraordinary geographical feature and climate conditions.

5. Yunnan
• Area: 154,124 square miles (394,000 sq km)
• Capital: Kunming

The province covers an area of over 390,000 square kilometers, with a population of 40.5 million.

6. Hunan
• Area: 81,081 square miles (210,000 sq km)
• Capital: Changsha

Hunan has a total area of 211,800 square km. a population of 65 million, and is home to the Tujia, Miao, Yao, Dong, Bai, Hui and Zhuang ethnic groups.

7. Shaanxi
• Area: 79,382 square miles (205,600 sq km)
• Capital: Xi’an

It covers an area of over 200,000 square kilometres and has a population of 35.05 million.

8. Hebei
• Area: 72,471 square miles (187,700 sq km)
• Capital: Shijiazhuang

The whole province is 190,000 square kilometres and has a population of 71.85 million.

9. Jilin
• Area: 72,355 square miles (187,400 sq km)
• Capital: Changchun

Covering an area of over 180,000 square kilometres, it has a population of 27.50 million.

10. Hubei
• Area: 71,776 square miles (185,900 sq km)
• Capital: Wuhan

The Province has an area of 180 thousand square kilometers and a population of 57.24 million.

11. Guangdong
• Area: 69,498 square miles (180,000 sq km)
• Capital: Guangzhou

The province covers an area of more than 212,000 square kilometres and has a population of 86.42 million.

12. Guizhou
• Area: 67,953 square miles (176,000 sq km)
• Capital: Guiyang

The Province covers an area of over 176,167 square kilometres and has population of more than 34.75 million.

13. Jiangxi
• Area: 64,479 square miles (167,000 sq km)
• Capital: Nanchang

With an area of over 160.000 square Kilometres, Jiangxi has a population of 43.39 million belonging to the Han, Miao, She, Yao and other nationalities.

14. Henan
• Area: 64,479 square miles (167,000 sq km)
• Capital: Zhengzhou

It covers an area of over 167,000 square kilometres and has a population of 100 million.

15. Shaanxi
• Area: 60,347 square miles (156,300 sq km)
• Capital: Taiyuan

Shaanxi Province covers an area of over 150,000 square kilometres and has a population of 33.35 million.

16. Shandong
• Area: 59,382 square miles (153,800 sq km)
• Capital: Jinan

The whole province covers an area of over 153,000 square kilometres and has population of 91.80 million.

17. Liaoning
• Area: 56,332 square miles (145,900 sq km)
• Capital: Shenyang

The population is 42 million, consisting of some thirty nationalities such as the Manchu, Mongolian, Hui and Korean nationalities.

18. Anhui
• Area: 53,938 square miles (139,700 sq km)
• Capital: Hefei

The total area of the Province is over 139,000 square kilometres with a population of about 60 million.

19. Fujian
• Area: 46,834 square miles (121,300 sq km)
• Capital: Fuzhou

The province covers an area of over 139,000 square kilometres and has a population of 36.89 million.

20. Jiangsu
• Area: 39,614 square miles (102,600 sq km)
• Capital: Nanjing

With a total area of over 102,600 square kilometres and a population of 74.28 million, the most density populated province in China.

21. Zhejiang
• Area: 39,382 square miles (102,000 sq km)
• Capital: Nanjing

Zhejiang Province covers an area of over 100,000 square kilometres with a population of 48.98 million.

22. Taiwan
• Area: 13,738 square miles (35,581 sq km)
• Capital: Taipei

23. Hainan

• Area: 13,127 square miles (34,000 sq km)

• Capital: Haikou

Its land covers an area of over 34,000 square kilometres with population of 8.67 million people.
