When buying a cellphone, what are some of the factors that are important to a buyer that will make him/her choose that particular brand?  I think you will agree that power, specifications, and most of all, value for money are some of the things we need to consider in a cellphone.

Samsung Electric Industries whose headquarter is located in Suwon, South Korea, was founded in 1969. Today the company makes everything from televisions to semiconductors.  Its first Android smartphone was released in 2009 and it can be credited with the launch of the first Android table in 2010.

Samsung is among the biggest players in the smartphone market in the world with its recently developed smartphones running on Tizen OS, an alternative to its Android based smartphones.  Its newest mobile model is Galaxy J7+ which was launched in September 2017.

2. Apple

Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in April 1976 to develop and sell personal computers. It was incorporated as Apple Computer, Inc. in January 1977.

An American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California, Apple Inc. designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services.  Its hardware products include the iPhone smartphone, the iPad tablet computer, the Mac personal computer, the iPod portable media player, the Apple Watch smartwatch, Apple TV digital media player and HomePod smart speaker.

On June 29, 2007, the company released the much awaited first-generation iPhone, a convergence of an internet-enabled smartphone and iPod.

After a succession of much-improved versions, Apple introduced on September 7, 2016 its newest version – iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus which feature improved system and graphics performance, water resistant, and a new rear dual-camera system on the 7 Plus model.

3. Huawei

Headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd is a Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company.  It is the largest telecommunication equipment manufacturer, having surpassed Ericsson in 2012.

Founded by Ren Zhengfei, a former engineer in the People’s Liberation Army in 1987, Huawei first focused on manufacturing of phone switches and later on expanded its business to include building telecommunications networks, providing operational and consulting services and equipment to companies worldwide, and manufacturing communications devices for the consumer market.

Huawei Ascend Division produces mobile phones and tablets.  Its mobile phones are the branded Huawei Ascend series and Huawei Honor which are usually mid-range quality but can compete against some high level devices from other brands. The Ascend series letter has meaning too: P for Platinum and G for Gold.  On April 15, 2015, Huawei launched the Huawei P8 and Huawei P8 Max, two high high-end Android smartphones, and subsequent models followed.

The company also developed EMUI (Emotion User Interface) a ROM/OS that is based on Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP).  This is preinstalled on most Huawei Smartphone devices and its subsidiaries the Honor Series.

By July 2017, Huawei has caught up and surpassed Apple in sales number. This made Huawei the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world after Samsung.


OPPO Electronics Corp. (commonly known as OPPO) major product lines include smartphones, Blu-ray players and other electronic devices. It is an electronics manufacturer based in Guangdong, China and was founded in 2004.


However, OPPO is known mainly known for its camera phone brand that targets mainly young people.    OPPO released Selfie Expert F series in 2016. According to IDC report, it was ranked as number 4 smartphone brand worldwide in 2017 Q1, and was number 1 smartphone brand in China in 2016.


Vivo Electronics is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer much known for its stylish and premium looking devices. Founded in 2009, it is headquartered in Dongguan, Guangdong, China.

In 2012, Vivo released the X1 which was the first Vivo phone to use the Hi-Fi chip. In 2013, it released the world’s first 2k-resolution screen phone, the Xplay3s.  Others in the series are X5Pro, X5Max, and the Xshot.

By the first quarter of 2015, Vivo already joined the ranks of the top 10 smartphone makers with a global market share of 2.7%.

6. LG

LG Electronics, which is part of the LG Group, is headquartered in Yeouido-dong, Seoul, South Korea. It comprises four business units: Home Entertainment, Mobile Communications, Home Appliance & Air Solution, and Vehicle Components.  LG Electronics was the world’s second-largest television manufacturer.

LG manufactures a wide range of smartphones and tablet devices.  It was the first manufacturer that introduced the curved smartphone, the G Flex, on October 27, 2013.  This was followed by the release of the G2, G3, and G4.  In 2016, LG unveiled the V20, and on February 26, 2017, it unveiled the LG G6.  On August 31, 2017, LG announced its newest model, V30.

LG produces some of the world’s thinnest and lightest smartphones and mobile devices with groundbreaking glasses-free 3D technology.

7. Xiaomi

Xiaomi Inc. is a privately owned Chinese electronics and software company headquartered in Beijing. It is the world’s 5th largest smartphone maker in 2017.

Xiaomi’s flagship mobile handset up to January 2015 was the Xiaomi Mi series, such as Xiaomi Mi 3 and  Mi 4 series which was initially launched in mainland China, followed by Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and India.  In a benchmarking test conducted by apps Antutu Quadrant and Geekbench, Mi 3 which uses modified Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 was found to be the world’s fastest Android smartphone.

Xiaomi showcased its ceramic Mi 5 on 24 February 2015 and on 27 September 2016, Xiaomi  unveiled the Mi 5s Plus along with the Mi 5s.  On  4 November 2016 Xiaomi released the Mi Mix which is a revolutionary phone, with its 91.3 percent screen to body ratio.  Xiaomi Mi 5c smartphone was launched in February 2017.

8. Lenovo

Founded in 1984 Lenovo Group Ltd. or Lenovo PC International (shortened to Lenovo) is a Chinese multinational technology company headquartered in Beijing, China and Morrisville, North Carolina.  Among its many products are smartphones.

Lenovo, according to a IHIS iSuppli, Lenovo was a top-three smartphone maker in China with 16.5% market share in the first quarter of 2012, and the second largest seller of mobile phones in China by volume.  Its Lenovo P2 has been nominated by RuangLaptop as a smartphone with the best battery life as of March 2017.

In 2014, Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014 to boost its share in the US market.  Lenovo plus Motorola was the 3rd largest producer of smartphones by volume in the world between 2011 and 2014.  After several changes, in March 2017, Lenovo finally announced that it will use the Motorola brand name in all future products in all regions. The company has also launched an online-only sub-brand for smartphones called Zuk in China.

9. Sony

Sony Mobile Communications, Inc (formerly Sony Ericsson) is a multinational mobile phone manufacturing company with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.  It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation.

In 2001, Sony acquired the Swedish telecommunication company Ericsson forming Sony Ericsson.  But the alliance had been rocky and the company posted losses.  SMC now focuses exclusively on the smartphone market under the Xperia name.  In 2015, Sony released Xperia Z5 Premium  first in Canada then US and Europe.

10. ZTE

Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation or ZTE is a Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and systems company and the world’s fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer having produced several Android smartphones and tablets.

Aside from selling products under the ZTE brand, it is also an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).  In September 2017,  ZTE launched its latest mobile model, the Blade A2S packed with strong features.
